This is most fundamental question that must be asked in selecting the ideal water feature for you. Because there are 3 basic varieties and categories of interior water fountains I will share some helpful hits for each of these options and let you take it from there to select a model and design that fits within your décor and personal taste.
It is important to look at this issue first before selecting and falling in love with a particular piece based on the design décor factors only to realize it will not fit within the intended and allotted space.
Wall Mounted Fountain: These units are excellent focal point pieces that really make a strong bold statement not only about the décor of the room but also the home or business owner.
These units can come in 2 main styles; horizontal and vertical.
In a room with a high ceiling, vaulted or cathedral a vertical unit is best suited as it draws your visual attention upward.
In contrast in a room with a lower ceiling and longer wall space a horizontal unit will look best.
The wall that the unit is intended to be mounted on should share the same dimensional proportions as the feature itself. This general rule will prevent the fountain from being ‘lost’ on the wall, or over take a wall in a particular room. Selecting and purchasing the correct shaped unit is very important. A feature that “fits” the wall is much more impressive than a unit that looks out of place strictly due to its size.
From here it is personal preference. I suggest creating a cardboard cutout of the dimensions of the wall fountain you are considering and hold it in place to see if it visually pleasing for you before you make a purchase. This same objective can be created by placing sticky notes on a wall where each of the four corners would be situated.
This process will help you visualize your options and minimize the potential for ordering or purchasing a feature that will not visually fit your room.
One additional consideration to consider is that a wall feature typically protrudes from the wall about 4 to 6 inches so it is advised not hang it in a high traffic location.
Table Top Fountains: These units are much simpler to determine and they also follow the same rule as other room décor accessories. The main dimension you need to determine is the diameter of the fountain. It is important choose a size that fits naturally within the décor and on the surface on which it will be placed. It is also important to make sure that the surface the fountain will be placed on can support the weight of the unit. You can place a bowl or stack of books as a mock fountain to help determine what size may or may not fit the space you have to work with. Consideration should also be given to the accessibility of a power source. If an electrical outlet is not easily accessible consider a battery operated table top fountain.
Floor Fountains: These features are typically much larger vertically than horizontally and are proportionately larger in depth. This is because these fountains are taller than they are wide and the base must support the height of the unit. Because of this fact they give effect the of a larger fountain.
It is important to find balance within the décor of the room and find a unit not too large or small but rather one that naturally fits the flow of the room. Typically a floor fountain will get lost on a large open wall. Because of their size they fit well within an array of other features or along side another feature room accessory or piece of furniture. They also can be used as excellent room dividers.
Standing floor fountains also can become a hazard if they are placed in a location that can impede or slow the traffic flow of a room.
